Abstract

The main purpose of this research was to find out the significant correlation between vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension of the eighth-grade students of SMP Negeri 3 Ubud in academic year 2021/2022. The population of this study was the eighth-grade students of SMP Negeri 3 Ubud. There were 30 students from 297 students taken as the samples of this study that were determined by using a random sampling technique. There were two research instruments used to measure their vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension, namely cloze procedure test to measure vocabulary mastery and short answer test to measure reading comprehension. The collected data analysed by using normality, homogeneity, hypothesis testing using Pearson product-moment and t-test. All the data was calculated by using SPSS 25 version for windows. The result of the data analysis showed that the normality value for vocabulary test was 0.069 and reading comprehension test was 0.128. It meant that the data were normal. Homogeneity value was 0.906. It meant that the data were homogeneous. Furthermore, Pearson product-moment showed 0.880, it meant there was very high correlation between two variables, it was ranked in scale of the scores between 0.80-1.000. Meanwhile, t-test was found 0.26, meaning that there was a significant correlation between vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension. Thus, the hypothesis (Ha) was accepted.
