AN ANALYSIS OF SUBORDINATE CLAUSE IN COMPLEX SENTENCE FOUND IN “BBC NEWS” INSTAGRAM CAPTION

This study concerns with the subordinate clause in complex sentence found in “BBC News” Instagram caption. This study aims to analyze the functions of subordinate clause in complex sentence, and the constituent structure of the complex sentence found in “BBC News” Instagram captions. The data of this study is taken from “BBC News” Instagram caption which published on 1st February – 31st March 2022. The data is analyzed by using qualitative method to conduct a clear analysis about the problems defined in this study. The theory proposed by Aarts (2001) is used to analyze the functions of subordinate clause in complex sentence and the theory proposed by Brown and Miller (1991) is used to analyze the constituent structure of complex sentence. The theory proposed by Quirk et al. (1985) is also used as a supporting theory to analyze the type of the sentence. The result of this study is presented through formal and informal method. Based on the finding of this study, four functions of subordinate clause in complex sentence are found in “BBC News” Instagram captions. This study found 120 complex sentences in “BBC News” Instagram captions. From four functions of subordinate clause in complex sentence, subordinate clause functioning as direct object is the most frequently found in the caption which are 57 data or 47,5%, then followed by subordinate clause functioning as adjunct which are 44 data or 36,7%, subordinate clause functioning as complement within phrase which are 18 data or 15%, and the least frequently used in the captions is subordinate clause functioning as subject which is 1 data or 0,8%. Each types of functions of subordinate clause in complex sentence has different placement in the sentence. The subordinate clause found placed at the beginning, in the middle, and at the end of the complex sentence.
