A SYNTACTICAL ANALYSIS OF COMPOUND SENTENCE FOUND IN WATTPAD STORY ‘THE EPHEMERAL: BREEDER’

Compound sentences are a part of syntax that studies the grammatical structure of sentences. In compound sentences, each independent clause is connected together. Based on the theory the clauses joint by the coordinator. It has three types. The types are a coordinating conjunction, a conjunctive adverb, and a semicolon. There are two aims of this study, first, to find the types of coordinator found in compound sentences in Wattpad The Ephemeral: Breeder, and second, to analyze structural constituents using tree diagrams in compound sentences found in Wattpad The Ephemeral: Breeder. This study uses a qualitative method in analyzing the data. Data observation in The Ephemeral: Breeder is done by reading the data source correctly, then the compound sentences found are written in the notes. To analyze the collected data, this study used the theory proposed by Oshima and Hogue (2006) entitled Longam Academic Writing Series 4 to determine the types of coordinator in compound sentence. Then in analyzing it’s tree diagram used the theory proposed by Brown and Miller (1991:21) in his book entitled Levels of Constituent Structure in New Testament Greek and supported by the theory of Noam A Chomsky (1965) in his book entitled Aspect of Theory of Syntax. There are 187 compound sentences consisting of 166 coordinating conjunctions or 89.5% of the total amount, 7 compound sentences with conjunctive adverbs or 3.5% of the total amount of sentences found, 14 compound sentences or 7% of semicolon types. This research found that in the tree diagram of compound sentences, there are independent clauses consist of NP and VP, also there are independent clauses that consists of NP, VP and NP.
