THE CORRELATION BETWEEN MOTIVATION AND SPEAKING ABILITY OF THE EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMPN 2 KUTA UTARA IN ACADEMIC YEAR 2022/2023

The study aimed at finding out the correlation between students’ motivation and their speaking ability of the eighth grade students of SMPN 2 Kuta Utara in academic year 2022/2023. The population of the eighth grade students were 413 students, but there were 42 students used as the samples in this study. They were chosen by random sampling technique. There were two research instruments used in the present study. The first instrument was a questionnaire to measure students' motivation and the second instrument was a speaking test about descriptive monologue to measure students' speaking ability. The data gathered in this study were analysed by using Pearson Product Moment Correlation in SPSS Statistics 25. The result of the data analysis and statistical calculation was 0.673. It showed that there is significant correlation between students' motivation and their speaking ability of the eighth grade students of SMPN 2 Kuta Utara in academic year 2022/2023. The interval of 0.60 - 0.799 indicated that the level of correlation in this study was at a high level.
