THE CORRELATION BETWEEN VOCABULARY MASTERY AND SPEAKING ABILITY OF THE EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMPN 4 MARGA IN ACADEMIC YEAR 2021/2022

This correlational study is aimed at finding out the correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and speaking ability of eighth grade students at SMPN 4 Marga in academic year 2021/2022. The samples were chosen by using cluster sampling method with as many as 32 students involved in the research. The researcher used two tests to get the data of vocabulary mastery and speaking ability, such as: multiple cloze test items for the vocabulary mastery and picture description test for the speaking ability. The obtained data were assessed by using Product Moment formula and analysed by using SPSS 26.00 for windows. Based on the data analysis, it showed that there is a high, significant and positive correlation between vocabulary mastery and speaking ability of eighth grade students at SMPN 4 Marga in academic year 2021/2022. Therefore, it answered the research question that there is a significant correlation between vocabulary mastery and speaking ability.
