Abstract

The purpose of this study was to know whether or not there is a relationship between students’ motivation and their achievement in studying at English Learning of SMP Negeri 1 Payangan in academic year 2022/2023. The population of this study was the eighth-grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Payangan. The sample of this study were 50 students which were taken with random sampling method. The design of this study was ex post facto research correlational study. To obtain the data, the researcher used a questionnaire. The questionnaire was aimed at finding out the students’ motivation, both intrinsic and extrinsic motivations. Based on the questionnaire, most of students’ motivation was intrinsic motivation. After analyzing both variables x (students’ motivation) and y (students’ achievement) by Pearson Product Moment formula, it is found that r (coefficient of correlation) = 0.162. It shows that there is a significant correlation between motivation and student achievement of the eighth-grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Payangan in academic year 2022/2023. Finally, the writer concludes the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted.
