Abstract

This thesis is aimed to figure out the correlation between students’ motivation and their writing ability of the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 5 Kediri in academic year 2021/2022. The design of this study was ex post facto research correlational study. There were two variables in the present research. The independent variable was motivation and the dependent variable was writing ability. The population of this study was the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 5 Kediri. The sample of this study were 40 students which were taken with random sampling method. Furthermore, the questionnaire and paragraph construction test were used as the research instrument. The research instruments were made in order to collect the required data. Then, the data were analyzed by using SPSS 25 version. There were two steps to analyze the data, namely pre-requisite analysis and hypothesis testing. The hypothesis testing was conducted by applying Pearson Product Moment Correlation and T-test. Based on the finding, it was found that the correlation coefficient obtained is 0.946. It shows that there is a significant correlation between vocabulary mastery and writing ability of the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 5 Kediri in academic year 2021/2022. In conclusion, the hypothesis is accepted.
