Abstract

Speaking is one of four major language skills that is really important to be mastered because is the basic of communication, which becomes a function of language learning. Speaking involves interaction with one or more participants. Based on the preliminary observation, the eighth-grade students of SMP Sila Dharma in academic year 2021/2022 faced speaking ability problems. In addition, they had difficult in fluency, comprehension and grammar. Moreover, the objective of this study was to know whether or not speaking skill of the eighth-grade students of SMP Sila Dharma in academic year 2021/2022 can be improved through role play combined with picture. Thus, to achieve the objective of the study, the researcher conducted a classroom action research. The research was done in two cycles and each cycle consisted of two sessions. The research instruments were administered to collect the required data. The data were then analyzed by comparing the results of the pre-test 63.83, post-test1 73.93 and post-test 2 82.96 which showed there were significant improvements of the subjects’ mean score from the pre-test to the post-test 1 and post-test 2. As the supporting data, the questionnaire was also administered in the end of the last cycle and the results showed positive responses of the implementation role play combined with picture. Based on the results of the pre-test, post-test and questionnaire, it could be concluded that speaking skill of the eighth-grade students of SMP Sila Dharma in academic year 2021/2022 can be improved through role play combined with picture.
