Abstract

This study is focused on the improving the students’ vocabulary mastery through last letter words game to the sixth grade students of SD Negeri 3 Abiansemal in the academic year 2011/2012. This study was intended to answer the Research Question: ‘To what extent is the effectiveness of Last Letter Word Game to improve the students' vocabulary of the sixth grade students of SD Negeri 3 Abiansemal in the academic year 2011/2012 ? and can Letter Word Game improve the students' mastery in English vocabulary of SD Negeri 3 Abiansemal in the academic year 2011/2012 ?In order to answer the research question, the data required for the study which are in the form of raw scores, showing the ability of the students in improving the students’ vocabulary through lastletter word game were collected by administering pre-test, post-test, and questionnaire which analyzed desriptively. The present classroom action study was started with administering IR or pre-test to the subject under study. The results of the data analysis of the IR score showed the mean figure of 45.23. The results of the data analysis of the reflection or post-test scores in cycle I (S1 and S2) showed the increasing mean figures of 57.61 and 64.28. The results of the data analysis of the reflection or post-test scores obtained by the subject under study in cycle II (S3 and S4) pointed out the increasing mean figures of 74.76 and 81.42. Compared with the mean figure of IR scores, the mean figure obtained by the subject under study for each session was convincingly much higher than the mean figure of IR scores. The grand mean figure of the reflection or post-test scores obtained by the subject under study in cycle I was 60.94 and in cycle II was 78.09. There was a significant difference of the grand mean figure between cycle I and cycle II. The difference of the grand mean figure of cycle I and cycle II was 17.15. These findings clearly showed that chained pictures could improve the students’ vocabulary. The result of the data analysis of questionnaires score showed the comparative percentage figures of 64.19 % for option A, 25.42 % for option B, 10.38 % for option C, and 0 % for option D. The result comparative percentage figures clearly showed the subject attitudes and motivation in learning vocabulary changed positively.
