Abstract

Discourse markers simply could be defined as a word or phrase that played role in managing the flow and linking the ideas in the text of discourse in order to make the text understandable. This study focused on the types and inappropriateness of discourse markers in 20 argumentative texts. The argumentative texts were about bird conservation. The aims of the study were: (1) to find out discourse markers, (2) to analyze inappropriateness of each discourse marker. The theories used in identifying the types of discourse markers were proposed by Fraser (1999) combined with Martinez (2004) and Kao and Chen (2011) to analyze the inappropriateness in using discourse markers. To analyze the data in this study, descriptive qualitative was used. The results of this study showed were 334 data found in argumentative texts. There were 102 elaborative markers (30,8%), followed with 79 inferential markers (23,6%), 55 contrastive markers (16,4%), 50 reason markers (14,9%), 40 exemplifier markers (11,9%), lastly eight conclusive markers (2,4%). Meanwhile, the inappropriateness was found in five out of six types as shown by students in their writing. The most occurrence errors overuse with 9 data (43%), followed by four data non-equivalent exchange (19%), then three wrong relation and semantic incompletions (14,2%), and lastly two distractions (9,6%).
