Abstract

This study aimed to find out the types of illocutionary act and the meaning of illocutionary act as found in Venom: Let There Be Carnage movie. The data were taken from the utterance produced by all characters in Venom: Let There Be Carnage that contain illocutionary act. The study used theory from Searle (1989) to analyze the types of illocutionary act and Theory from Leech (1981) about the meaning of illocutionary act and supported by the context of situation theory by Halliday (1985). The observation method used in collecting the data because the data were obtained from the conversation among the characters in the movie. The data was described in a deeper explanation and the method applied in analyzing the data was qualitative method. In presenting the data analysis, this study applied both formal and informal method. This study using 30 samples data of illocutionary act in the data analysis. The result of the study showed all the types of illocutionary act found in the movie, those are assertive, directive, commissive, expressive and declaration. There were 164 data of illocutionary act found in utterance produced by the characters in the movie. The most type of illocutionary act occurred was directive illocutionary act with 82 or 50%, followed by assertive 38 or 23,1% data found, expressive 26 or 16% data, commissive with 17 or 10,3% and declaration with 1 or 0,6% data found. From seven types of meaning, there were found five types of meaning, those are 103 data categorized as conceptual meaning, 29 data as affective meaning, 19 data as connotative meaning, 11 data as social meaning and 2 data as thematic meaning.
