Abstract

This study concerns with the descriptive analysis of figurative language in the song lyrics by Maroon 5’s “V” album. The objectives of the study are to describe the types of figurative language and to identify the meaning of figurative language. The researcher used the theory of Figurative Language proposed by Knickerbocker and Reninger (1963) and also the theory of meaning proposed by Leech (1981). The result found that there are 28 sentences of six kinds of figurative language used in Maroon 5’s “V” album, such as simile with 4 or 14,28%, hyperbole with 11 or 39,28%, metaphor with 7 or 25%, personification with 2 or 0,71%, metonymy with 3 or 10,71%, and synecdoche 1 or 0,35%. It is indicated that the dominant type of figurative language in the song lyrics in this album is hyperbole. The result meaning of figurative language is also stated clearly such as conceptual meaning, connotative meaning, affective meaning, and reflective meaning. It can be concluded that figurative language has important roles in created the song lyric. Using figurative language makes the song more interesting. That is why the song writers used figurative language in their song lyrics.
