THE USE OF DEIXIS IN THE SONG LYRICS IN “PLASTIC HEART” ALBUM BY MILEY CYRUS

This study aims to analyze the types of deixis that exist in each of the selected song lyrics on the album "Plastic Heart" by Miley Cyrus and also to analyze the meaning of the references in each song lyrics. This study uses the theory from George Yule's book (1996) to analyze the types of deixis and references found in song lyrics. Based on this theory, there are three main types of deixis such as person deixis, place or spatial deixis, and time or temporal deixis. This research applied for descriptive qualitative method supported by simple quantitative calculation to count the percentage of each type of deixis. Observation methods were employed in this research to collect the data. Based on the result can be concluded that three main types of deixis are found in the song lyric. there are: person deixis found 305 data, place deixis found 45 data, and time deixis found 161 data. The total data found is 511 data of deixis words. The most dominant data found in the song lyric is person deixis which refers to the speaker or the singer himself in the song, based on the singer or the speaker’s life experience. This research is expected to provide an understanding of deixis and the context that is conveyed by the speaker.
