Oktapiani, Ni Putu. 2021. An Analysis of Figurative Language Found in Adele’s Selected Song Lyrics. English Study Program, Faculty of Foreign Languages, Mahasaraswati Denpasar University. Supervisor: I Gusti Ayu Vina Widiadnya, S.S., M.Hum; Co-supervisor: I Dewa Ayu Devi Maharani Santika, S.S., M.Hum. The study concerns with the analysis of figurative language and the types of meaning in selected Adele‟s song from her album “21 albums”. The songs titles were Rolling in the Deep, Set Fire to the Rain, Turning Tables, He Won’t Go, One and Only, and Someone Like You which were released in early 2011. The study aims to analyze the use of figurative language in the song lyrics and the meaning of the figurative language found. This study uses the descriptive qualitative method which analyzed the data descriptively and based on the theories that used in semantics. The theories used were the theory of figurative language proposed by Knickerbocker and Reninger and the second theory refers to the study of meaning proposed by Leech (1974). The study concludes that the total of figurative language found in the six songs of album “21” by Adele are 27 sentences. According to the percentage table, the following sequence of figurative language shows that metaphor and irony have the same number which is contained of 1 data or 4%. Simile, personification, and dead metaphor also have the same numbers which are contained 2 data or 7%. Synecdoche contains 3 data or 11%, Hyperbole has 4 data which 15%. Paradox has 5 data or 15%, meanwhile metonymy contains 7 data or 26%. Metonymy becomes the dominant types in analyzing the six songs of album “21” by Adele because in creating a song, the songwriter believes that song will become more interesting and beautiful if it uses another term to describe one other. The affective meaning becomes the dominant types of meaning used in the figurative language found because it shows the reflection of the speaker‟s personal attitude or feeling towards the listener or the target of the utterance.
