Abstract

The use of slang is not only found in society but can also be found in song lyrics and conversations in films. This study has two aims namely (1) to identify the types of slang words used by the characters in “Spider-Man: No Way Home” movie. (2) to analyze the types of meaning of slang words found in “Spider-Man: No Way Home” movie. This study used qualitative method and applied two theories, i.e. (1) the theory proposed by Kipfer and Chapman (2007) to analyzes the types of slang, (2) the theory proposed by Leech (1981) to analyzed the types of meaning. The result shows there are two types of slang word found, those are primary slang with total of 33 data and secondary with total 3 data. In addition, the meaning of the slang words used in the utterances of the movie characters can be categorized into several types: conceptual, connotative, social, affective, reflected, collocative and thematic. Social meaning held the highest in the first percentage total with 27 data, affective meaning with 6 data, followed by conceptual with 2 data, and lastly connotative meaning with 1 data on each meaning. Meanwhile the types of meaning that did not found are reflected, collocative, thematic meaning.
