Abstract

This study focused on the imagery used in the novel entitled If Cats Disappeared From The World. The aims of this study are to identify the types of imagery and the functions of imagery used in the novel. There are two theories used as the guidance of the analysis in this study, they are the theory by Perrine in Johnson & Arp (2017) about the types of imagery and the theory by Hasanuddin (2012) about the functions of imagery. The data of this study were collected by using observation method. The data of this study were analyzed by using qualitative research method. The finding of this study were presented in formal and informal method. The results of this study showed that all of the types and functions of imagery were present within the novel. Based on the finding, there are a total of 448 data classified as imagery with visual imagery as the most dominant type of imagery. The study found that visual imagery is dominantly used in the novel to describe the world and characters visually in order to give a clear understanding of narrative, and all of the functions of imagery in the novel are related to each other which cannot be separated from one to another to be functioned as an imagery.
