Abstract

This study aims to find and analyze the figurative language contained in the lyrics of selected songs by Billie Eilish. The theories used in conducting this research: first by Knickerbocker and Reninger (1974) entitled Interpreting Literature. It is used to classify the types of figurative language. They divide figurative language into six types; simile, metaphor, personification, hyperbole, synecdoche, and metonymy. The second theory was put forward by Leech (1981), entitled Semantics: The Study of Meaning. He divides meaning into seven kinds; conceptual meaning, connotative meaning, social meaning, reflective meaning, affective meaning, collotative meaning, and thematic meaning. This theory is used to analyze and find the meaning of figurative language in the lyrics of selected songs by Billie Eilish. These two theories are used to solve the research problem: (1) what kind of figurative language is found in the lyrics of the chosen song by Billie Eilish. (2) What figurative language meaning is used in the lyrics of the selected song by Billie Eilish. The purpose of this study was to determine the types of figurative language found in the lyrics of selected songs by Billie Eilish and to analyze the meaning of the other six types of meaning of each figurative language. The method used in collecting data related to the subject of this research is the documentation method. Researchers collected data from song lyrics by reading songs and taking notes. This study discusses descriptive analysis of figurative language in the lyrics of selected songs by Billie Eilish. After investigating the sentences in the song lyrics, the writer found some figurative language findings in them. There are six types of figurative language used in song lyrics, namely simile, metaphor, hyperbole, personification, synecdoche, and metonymy. The results showed that there were 21 sentences that had figurative language. From 21 sentences there are 2 items or 9.52% simile, 3 items or 14.28% metaphor, 2 items or 9.52% personification, 12 items or 57.14% hyperbole, 1 item or 4.76% synecdoche and 1 items or 4.76% of metonymy, and the author uses two types of figurative meaning of seven types based on Leech (1981) the theory used is; connotative meaning and affective meaning.
