CODE SWITCHING IN THE NOVEL “BIRU PADA JANUARI”

This study is concerned on Code Switching in the novel Biru Pada Januari. It has two aims (1) to find out the types of code switching in the novel Biru Pada Januari (2) to find out the reasons of using of code switching in the novel Biru Pada Januari. Qualtative method was used for analyzing the data which were collected from fifty data that found in the novel. The data were analyzed using the theory proposed by Apple and Muysken (1987:118) about the types of code switching, and Hoffman (1991) about the reason of used code switching. The result of this study showed that all three types of code switching occurs in the novel Biru Pada Januari, namely; tag switching, inter-sentential switching, and intra-sentential switching. While from five reasons of code switching, those are talking about particular topic, quoting somebody else, expressing feeling about something, interjection, repetition used for clarification. The most of three types of code switching is inter-sentential switching and the less occurrence is tag switching. Whereas for five reasons of code switching, expressing felling about something is the dominant and the less occurrence is quoting somebody else.
