Abstract

Figurative language is often used in poems. This helps the poem writer to express his feeling by using some variant of languages and make the poems sounds interesting. The objectives of the study are to identify the types of figurative language and to analyze the meaning of the figurative language used in Victor Hugo poems. The data were analyzed based on the theory from Knickerbocker and Reninger (1974) used to identify the types of figurative language and theory proposed by Leech (1974) used to analyze the meaning of figurative language. The method used in collecting the data was observation method.The result shows there are 5 types of figurative language used in the Victor Hugo poems. They are; Simile, Metaphor, Personification, Hyperbole, Metonymy. There were found 17 sentences identified using those five types of figurative language such as; simile is 2, metaphor is 2, personification is 5, hyperbole is 6, metonymy is 2. The dominant type is hyperbole 6. The result shows there are two types of meaning used in of Victor Hugo poems , such are; affective meaning and connotative meaning.
