Abstract

Figurative language refers to choices of words in presenting the symbol and expression that has complicated meaning, colorful writing, or evocative comparison. This study was conducted an analysis that related to figurative languages in the song lyrics entitled “Analysis of Figurative Language in “Neck Deep” Selected Song Lyrics”. It aimed to identify the types of figurative language by using Knickerbocker and Renninger’s theory (1963) and also analyze the meaning by applying the theory proposed by Leech (1981). In collecting the data, this study used descriptive qualitative method. The data were taken from seven song lyrics that written by Neck Deep. There were found seven types of figurative language in the selected data namely; hyperbole, metaphor, simile, synecdoche, allusion, personification, and also paradox. On the other hand, the meaning is divided into three categories they are; connotative, conceptual, and affective. This study concludes that figurative language plays the significant role in expressing the symbol and expression that are interesting and meaningful for the listeners. Therefore, the song lyrics are written more meaningful and colorful by using figurative language.
