Abstract

The object of this research is the analysis of figurative language in Little Mix song lyrics. Song lyrics were analyzed based on the theory proposed by Perrine (1970) to find out the types of figurative language contained in the song, and the meaning theory by Leech (1974) was used to describe the meaning of each type of figurative language found. There are two research objectives set, namely to identify the types of figurative language found in Little Mix song lyrics and to analyze the figurative language meaning found in Little Mix song lyrics. The data is taken from the lyrics of the songs chosen by Little Mix. This study uses a qualitative approach and formal and informal methods to describe the types and meanings of figurative language. This study reveals that there are 5 out of a total of 11 types of figurative language found in the lyrics of Little Mix's selected songs. They are simile, personification, hyperbole, paradox, and metaphor. Also, the most frequent appearance is hyperbole. Meanwhile, only 2 out of 7 types of figurative language meanings were found, namely: connotative meaning and affective meaning. These two types were found with a total of 17 kinds of affective meaning and 11 types of connotative meaning. However, one of them occurs most frequently, called affective meaning (17). It can be concluded that figurative language plays an important role in a song. Song lyrics should have something unique and interesting to attract listeners' attention. It is believed that singers use figurative language to add color to song lyrics so that listeners can play with their imaginations to capture the meaning.
