Abstract

Language style occurs in daily conversation as well as in a movieconversation since a movie is created as close as it can be to the daily life. Thedata were taken from conversation and the utterances by the characters onthat movie and were analyzed qualitatively by using the theory fromJoos (1967) about language style, and it was combined with the theory from Holmes (1992) whichstated the function of language. The data were collected through observationandnote taking. From 19 data there are four types of language style and six types of language function were found. The language styles are four data for formal style, three data for consultative style, nine data for casual style, and three data for intimate style. Casual style is the most dominant type in this movie. The sixfunction of language that found by the researcher are four data for expressive, nine data for directive, three data for referential, one data for metalinguistic, onedata for poetic, and one data for phatic. The most function of language occurredinthe data analysis is directive function.
