Abstract

This research entitled “An Analysis of Directive Speech Act in The Commuter Movie”. The purposes of this study are to analyze the type of directive speech act and its function. In this regard, this study applied the theory of Searle and Vanderveken (1985) to analyze the type of directive speech act. As for its function, Leech's theory (1983) regarding the function of directive speech act has been applied. In addition, to support this research, the theory of the context of situation from Halliday (1985) was also used. In taking the data in the study, observation methods and note-taking techniques were used. Furthermore, to analyze the findings of the data, descriptive qualitative methods was used. The types of directive speech act that included have been marked using the theory of type and context of situation. Then, continue by analyzing its function. Data findings are presented in formal and informal methods. Formal methods are presented in the form of percentage tables. While informal methods are presented in the form of descriptive writing to explain the table. 140 utterances have been identified as directive types. There are 10 types of directives found in The Commuter movie such as direct, request, ask, tell, require, command, order, forbid, warn, and beg. The most frequent types used was command act (44 utterances or 31,2% from total data). While there are 4 types of functions found, namely convivial, competitive, conflictive and collaborative. This topic is interesting to analyze because it often occurs in everyday life.
