Abstract

This study deals with the pragmatics field. Specifically, it is focused on analyzing the flouting maxim in Spider-Man: No Way Home movie. This study has two objectives, namely (1) to find out the types of flouting maxims shown by the characters in Spider-Man: No Way Home movie. (2) To find out the reasons for flouting the maxims by the characters in Spider-Man: No Way Home movie. This study applied qualitative method in analyzing the data to have a clear description about the discussion. In collecting the data, this study applied observation method in order to identify the selected utterances in the dialogue. Those data were analyzed based on the theory of Grice’s Cooperative Principle cited in Cutting (2002) for the types of flouting maxim and also the theory of Halliday (1985) as a supporting theory. Meanwhile, the reasons of flouting maxim were analyzed based on the theory of Leech (1983). As a result, the characters in Spider-Man: No Way Home movie flouted all types of flouting maxim, namely flouting maxim of quantity 10 times; flouting maxim of quality 3 times; flouting maxim of relation 10 times; and flouting maxim of manner 2 times. For the reason, the characters used all types of reason, namely collaborative 16 times; competitive 5 times; convivial 2 times; and conflictive 2 times.
