TRANSLATION STRATEGY OF TABOO EXPRESSIONS FOUND IN THE SUBTITLE OF “PROJECT X” MOVIE

This study aims at analyzing of taboo words that are found in the subtitle of Project X movie. It aims (1) to identify and analyze the taboo expression in the Project X movie, (2) to identify and analyze translation strategies used by the translator in translating taboo expressions in subtitle of the Project X movie. The data of this research is the subtitles that contain with taboo expressions in the movie. The theory from Batistella (2005) is used to support this analysis in classifying the types of taboo words, and the theory from Baker (1992) is used to analyze the translation strategy. The results consist of four types of taboo expressions from eighty data that found in the movie. They are epithet (25 data or 31,25%), profanity (8 data or 10%), vulgarity (37 data or 46,25%), and obscenity (10 data or 12,5%). For the translation strategies that are used in translating taboo expressions, the results show that there are eight types of translation strategies. Those are translation by more general word (19 data or 23,75%), translation by more neutral word/less expressive word (8 data or 10%), translation by cultural substitution (13 data or 16,25%), translation using loan word or loan word plus explanation (5 data or 6,25%), translation by paraphrasing using a related word (12 data or 18,3%), translation by paraphrase using unrelated word (2 data or 2,5%), translation by omission (19 data or 23,75%), and translation by illustration (2 data or 2,5%).
