AN ANALYSIS OF FLOUTING MAXIM FOUND IN GHOSTBUSTERS: AFTERLIFE MOVIE

This study aims to analyze the flouting maxims in the Ghostbusters: Afterlife movie. In more specific terms, this study aims to identify the types of flouting maxims and find out the reason in flouting maxim performed by the character in the movie. Flouting maxims is an important thing to consider in making communication more effective and making the sentences acceptable for the listener. There are two problem to be solved in the study, such as (1) what are the types of flouting maxim conveyed by the character in the movie entitle Ghosbusters: Afterlife? And what are the reason for flouting maxim conveyed by the character in the movie entitle Ghostbusters: Afterlife?. The scope of this study focuses on analyzing the types of flouting maxim and the reason why the character in the movie flout the maxim. The theories that used in this study are the theory from Grice (1975) and Leach (1983). The theory from Grice (1975) is use to classify the types of flouting maxims in the Ghostbusters: Afterlife movie. The result of the study shows that the types of flouting maxim flound in the movie are 19 data. The highest occurrence in the Ghostbusters: Afterlife movie is flouting maxim of quantity which is takes 6 data (32%). The followed by flouting maxim of relevance 5 data (26%) and the lowest is flouting maxim of quality and flouting maxim of manner with same occurrence 4 data (21%). One of the main reasons for the occurrence of flouting maxims is collaborative reason. It appears 9 times (53%) in the movie.
