Abstract

This study focused on the types of imagery presented in the novel Seven Years of Darkness. This study aims to identify the types of imagery and the diction of imagery used in the novel. The data in this study were taken from a translated novel written by a Korean fiction writer named Jeong You-Jeong. The data were taken from phrases, clauses, and sentences in the novel. The data of this study were collected based on library research. The data of this study was analyzed through the qualitative descriptive method. The data were analyzed based on the relevant theory of literature specifically to identify the imagery presented in the novel using the theory from Perrine in Johnson & Arp (2017) about the seven types of imagery. Based on the findings, there are 97 data that can be classified as imagery, namely visual (45%), auditory (14%), olfactory (4%), gustatory (2%), tactile (5%), organic (10%), and kinesthetic imagery (19%), and then find out the diction used in imagery is analyzed using the theory of diction proposed by Keraf (2010) specifically on the connotation and denotation meaning with visual imagery being the most frequent.
