Abstract

Speaker intention is an important thing in conversation to avoid misunderstanding and construct a good communication. This is called cooperative principle. The fact is that not all the conversation runs smoothly, some people are uncooperative in their utterances and it is called as flouted. This study focused on the flouting maxim in Sing 2 movie. The aims of this study are to find out types of maxims are flouted by the characters in Sing 2 movie and to describe the reason why the characters flouted the maxim in Sing 2 movie. In this study, the study focused on the theory of Grice (1975) in analyzing the type of flouting maxims and a theory from Leech (1983) in analyzing the reason behind the maxim flouted by the characters in Sing 2 movie. This study used descriptive qualitative method and use both formal and informal method. The result of the study showed that the types of flouting maxim found in the movie are 25 data. The result of the study showed that the types of flouting maxim found in the movie are 25 data. Flouting maxim of quantity occurs 6 times (24%), flouting maxim of relation occurs 5 times (20%) and the dominant flouting maxim that uttered by the characters in this movie is flouting maxim of quality and manner with the same frequency 7 (28%). For the reason of flouting maxim there are competitive which occurs 6 times (24%), convivial occurs 5 times (20%), conflictive occurs 3 times (12%) and the reason that commonly found is collaborative reason with the frequency of 11 (44%).
