Abstract

This study investigates the use of slang words in the song lyrics by Anne Marie’s. The study aimed to figure out the types of slang words and the meaning of slang found in Anne Marie’s song lyrics. This study applied two theories, namely the theory proposed by Kipfer and Chapman (2007) to find out the types of slangs and theory of meaning proposed by Leech (1981) to analyze the meaning of slang. The descriptive qualitative method was used in this study. Anne Marie's song lyric was chosen as the data source because there are many slang word that found in these song lyrics. This study used observation method to collect the data. The results showed 14 data of primary slang words and 3 data of secondary slang words. In analyzing the meaning of slang, this study found four types of meaning; those were 15 data of conceptual meaning, 1 data of social meaning, and 1 data of reflected meaning. This study found conceptual meaning as the dominant type of meaning in slang words compared to other types of meaning proposed by Leech (1981). Slang words are commonly used in literary works, such as in song lyrics because slang can convey a feeling that can attract listeners.
