AN ANALYSIS OF FLOUTING MAXIM FOUND IN THE PERFECT DATE MOVIE

The aims of this study is to analyse the flouting maxim in The Perfect Date movie. In more specific terms, this study aims to identify the types of flouting maxims and find out the reason in flouting maxims performed by the characters in the movie. Flouting maxim is an important thing to consider in making communication more effective and making the sentence acceptable for the listener. There are two problems to be solved in this study, such as (1) What are the types of flouting maxim performed by the characters in The Perfect Date movie? (2) What are the reasons of flouting maxims by the characters in The Perfect date movie?. The scope of this study is to analyze the types of flouting maxims and the reason why the characters flout the maxim in the movie. This study used the theories from Grice (1975) and Leech (1983). The theory from Grice (1975) is used to classify the types of flouting maxims in The Perfect Date movie. The result of this study shows the types of flouting maxim found in the movie are 19 data. The highest occurrence in The Perfect Date movie is flouting maxim of quantity which appeared in 10 data (52%). Then, it is followed by flouting maxim of quality found 3 data (16%). Next, the flouting maxim relevance found in the movie are 3 data (16%) and the flouting maxim of manner 3 data (16%). One main reason for the occurrence of flouting maxims is collaborative. It appears in 10 times (52%) in the movie.
