Abstract

This study focused on analyzing the conjunctions used in a Spenser Novel entitled Pale Kings and Princes. Conjunctions are used to connect sentences and give information to the next clause or sentence. The aims of this study are to find out and analyze the types and functions of conjunction found in a Spenser Novel entitled Pale Kings and Princes. This study used qualitative method to analyze the data. Obaservation method was done to collect the data by apllying several techniques, such as; reading, underlining and classifying the conjunctions based on their types and functions. The theory propose by Halliday and Hasan (1976, 1985) was used to analyse the types and functions of conjunctions found in the Pale Kings and Princesnovel. The result of this research showed 437 total of data which divided into 424 data types of conjunction and 13 data of function of conjunction. There are 265 data or 68,6% of additive relations, 50 data or 11,7% of adversative relations, 65 data or 15,3% of causal relations, and 18 data or 4,2% of temporal relations. There are four function that found in data source such as 4 data of simple additive relations (30,7%), 2 data of adversative relations (15,3%), 1 data of general causal relations (7,7%), and 6 data of simple temporal relations (46,1%). additve conjunctions and simple temporal relation are the most dominant types and functions of conjunction found in this novel.
