Abstract

The object of the study is Rita Ora’s selected song lyrics. The song lyrics were analyzed based on the theory proposed by Knickerbocker and Renninger (1963:367) to define the types of figurative languages used in song lyrics, theory of meaning by Leech (1981:9-19) used to describe the meaning of each type of figurative languages found, and theory from Halliday (1985:10) to analyzed the context of the situation in Rita Ora’s selected song lyrics. The data in this study was collected using descriptive qualitative methods. This study analyzed 10 types of figurative languages in Rita Ora’s selected song lyrics. The most frequent appearance was irony. The 7 types of meaning were found namely connotative meaning, affective meaning, conceptual meaning, collocative meaning, social meaning, reflected meaning, and thematic meaning. The connotative meaning is dominant in all song lyrics. Before analyzing the meaning of the ten Rita Ora songs, first find the context of the situation in the song, the data is analyzed to find out the field, tenor, and mode. Field is to analyze what happens in the song, tenor is to find out who participates in the song, and mode is for knowing how the data is conveyed.
