AN ANALYSIS OF ILLOCUTIONARY ACTS FOUND IN THE UP MOVIE

There are lot of illocutionary act could be found either in human daily communication or even in literary works such as movie. In a movie, lot of people are trying to express some messages by consisting illocutionary act which could maintain the conversation. This study is discussed an analysis of Illocutionary acts and the meaning of each illocutionary act found in the UP Movie. The aimed of this study were to find out the types of illocutionary act used on the movie and to understand the context of situation meaning and to find out the meaning implied on each utterance conducted with the illocutionary acts. The data was taken from the dialogues from the characters in the UP movie. This study used the theory from Yule (1996) proposed about the types of illocutionary acts in order to answer the first problem. Meanwhile to answer the second problem this study used the theory meaning that proposed by Leech (1981) and the theory proposed by Halliday and Hassan (1989) about the context of situation. The data were analyzed by using descriptive qualitative method. There are 21 data that were analyzed in this study. According to the analysis there are 5(23%) representatives, 9(45%) of directives, 3(14%) data of commisives, 3(14%) data of expressives, and 1(5%) datum of declaratives. This study shows that directives illocutionary acts became the dominant expression used by the character’s utterance on the UP movie. Meanwhile the most common types of meaning of illocutionary act found on the UP movie is conceptual meaning to express the intention on their utterances.
