THE CORRELATION BETWEEN MASTERY OF GRAMMAR AND SPEAKING ABILITY OF THE ELEVENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMA N 1 NUSA PENIDA IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2020/2021

The present study was intended to figure out the significant correlation between mastery of grammar and speaking ability of the eleventh grade students of SMA N 1 Nusa Penida in academic year 2020/2021. The present study made use of an ex-post facto research with correlation design. The research samples consisted of 35 students chosen by means of a cluster sampling method. The data were collected by administering the research instruments in the form of a structured grammar test and speaking test (interview). The obtained data were statistically analyzed through pre-requisite analysis; normality and homogeneity tests and hypothesis testing: Pearson product-moment correlation and t-test. After the research data were normally and homogenously distributed, the researcher then did hypothesis testing. The results of the data analysis clearly revealed the alternative hypothesis was finally accepted. In other words, the research findings confirmed that there is a significant correlation between mastery of grammar and speaking ability of the eleventh-grade students of SMA N 1 Nusa Penida in the academic year 2020/2021.
