THE USE OF STORYTELLING TECHNIQUE COMBINED WITH PICTURE SERIES TO IMPROVE SPEAKING SKILL OF THE EIGHTH-GRADE STUDENTS OF SMPN 1 UBUD IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2024/2025

Speaking is a key component of English language learning that enables students to communicate ideas effectively. However, many students face challenges, such as difficulties with fluency, grammar, and comprehension. This study aimed to determine whether the speaking skills of eighth-grade students at SMPN 1 Ubud in the academic year 2024/2025 could be improved using a storytelling technique combined with picture series. Conducted as classroom action research in two cycles, the study involved 39 students from class 8B. Data were collected through tests and a questionnaire. The results showed significant improvements in the students’ speaking skills, with mean scores increasing from 67.10 in the pre-cycle to 77.23 in Cycle I and 84.33 in Cycle II. Additionally, 37 out of 39 students met the minimum passing grade. The questionnaire also revealed positive student responses toward the teaching technique. Thus, the storytelling technique combined with picture series effectively improved the speaking skills of the eighth-grade students of SMPN 1 Ubud in the academic year 2024/2025.
