EXPLORING THE BENEFITS OF USING SHORT STORIES IN ENGLISH READING CLASS OF THE NINTH-GRADE OF SMP DWIJENDRA DENPASAR IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2024/2025

This study explores the benefits of using short stories in English reading classes for ninth-grade students at SMP Dwijendra Denpasar during the academic year 2024/2025. Short stories are employed as a teaching medium to enhance students' comprehension, vocabulary acquisition, motivation, and critical thinking. The research utilized a basic interpretive qualitative approach, employing closed- ended questionnaires distributed through Google Forms and semi-structured interviews with selected students. The participants included all students from Class IX C, and the study focused on their perceptions of the educational benefits of short stories. Data analysis revealed that short stories significantly improved students' comprehension of English texts, enriched vocabulary, and fostered greater engagement and motivation in reading activities. Additionally, students reported increased confidence in discussing, analyzing, and connecting with the stories, thereby enhancing their critical thinking and collaborative learning skills. The findings support the integration of short stories into English reading curricula as an effective tool for improving language skills and fostering a positive learning environment. The study contributes valuable insights for educators aiming to create engaging and effective English learning experiences through the use of literary texts.
