THE CORRELATION BETWEEN GRAMMAR MASTERY AND WRITING SKILL OF THE SEVENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMPN 7 DENPASAR IN ACADEMIC YEAR 2024/2025

Like other languages, English consists of linguistic competence, such as vocabulary, and language performance such as writing skills that play important roles in language learning. Therefore, regarding the importance of grammar and writing for students, the researchers conducted this study discussing the correlation between grammar mastery and writing skill. This research aimed to find out the correlation between grammar mastery and writing skill. The problem of this study was: is there any significant correlation between grammar mastery and writing skill of the seventh-grade students of SMPN 7 Denpasar in Academic Year 2024/2025? The population of this research consist 360 students from the seventh-grade students of SMPN 7 Denpasar in academic year 2024/2025. The samples of this study are 80 students which were taken by cluster random sampling technique. The data were collected from sentence construction test for grammar mastery and paragraph construction test for writing skill. The obtain data were statistically analyzed by using Pre-requisite Analysis and Hypothesis testing. The result of normality test was 0.198 for grammar mastery and 0.200 for writing skill and the result of homogeneity test was 0.164. The next analysis could be done by using Pearson product-moment correlation and T-test. Based on the finding, it was found that correlation coefficient obtained is 0.839. It shows that there is a positive and high correlation between grammar mastery and writing skill. In addition, the results revealed the alternative hypothesis was accepted. In conclusion, there is significant correlation between grammar mastery and writing skill of the seventh-grade students of SMPN 7 Denpasar in academic year 2024/2025.
