Abstract

This study investigated errors of written English on the outdoor signs of public spaces in Canggu Village. Language error is the situation when the rules or conventions of a language are violated in communication. These errors can happen in speaking or writing and often include mistakes in grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, spelling, punctuation, or word usage. The data collected were analyzed descriptively using Van Valin (1993) and Vinay & Darbelnet (2000). The types of error were divided into four namely grammatical, lexical, phonological and pragmatic. Meanwhile, the factor causing the language errors are the inappropriate applications of the translation procedure, lack of understanding of the Target Language's grammar and the strong tendency for the translator to prioritize the Source Language's syntactical grammar. Based on analysis, it was found that lexical error was the most error found on outdoor signs public space Canggu which consisted of 22 errors, grammatical consisted of 10 errors, phonological consisted of 1 error and pragmatic consisted of 1 error. Meanwhile the most found for cause of error was lack of understanding of the target language's grammar with 22 occurrences and the inappropriate applications of the translation procedure with 12 occurrences.
