Abstract

This study focuses on analyzing the types and functions of conjunctions in “This Wicked Fate”, a novel by Kalynn Bayron. A text is considered cohesive when its elements are logically connected, and conjunctions serve as key cohesive devices. The purpose of this research is to identify the types of conjunctions and explain their functions in the novel’s narrative and dialogue. The study applies Halliday and Hasan's (1976) cohesion theory and Ehrlich's (1991) grammar theory. A observative method was used to collectand recording the data, the qualitative method to analyze, exploring and understanding data from the chapters of the novel. The findings reveal four types of conjunctions: additive, adversative, causal, and temporal. Among them, the additive type especially the word “and” is the most dominant. Functionally, external conjunctions appear more frequently than internal ones, emphasizing action and interaction between characters. This study concludes that conjunctions not only connect ideas grammatically but also enhance story coherence, character development, and the overall meaning of the narrative.
