Abstract

This study is concerned with the analysis of translation shifts in the novel Black Beauty by Anna Sewell. In this study, there were two aims of the study that are: (1) to analyse the types of shifts in translation found in the novel Black Beauty. and (2) to explain the shift in translation that occurs in the novel Black Beauty. The data source of this study was taken from the Black Beauty Novel by Anna Sewell in the English version and Black Beauty translated by Djokolelono in the Indonesian version. The data were collected through the observation method and note-taking technique. The descriptive qualitative method was used to analyse the data of this thesis. The analysis was based on the theory of translation proposed by Larson (1984), and the theory of translation shift proposed by Catford (1965) was then supported by the theory of Vinay and Darbelnet in Venuti (2000) about the process of translation. This study revealed there were two types of translation shift found in the Black Beauty Novel by Anna Sewell, namely Level shift and category shift. Category shift is divided into four subgroups: structure shift, unit shift, class shift, and Intra-system shift. This study concludes that translation shifts are necessary to help keep the original novel clear, understandable, and culturally appropriate in the target language
