Abstract

This study aims to analyze the personality of Alice as the main character in Alice in Wonderland (2010) directed by Tim Burton, and how she resolves internal and external conflicts through the story. This study used psychoanalytic theory by Sigmund Freud (1923), which consists of the id, ego, and superego, to analyze Alice’s psychological development. It also applied conflict mode instrument theory to identify how Alice deals with the conflicts she experiences. The data were collected by repeatedly watching the movie, reading the movie script, and selecting scenes that reflected Alice’s personality and conflict management strategies. The result shows that Alice’s personality is influenced by the dynamic interaction of the id, ego, and superego. The id is shown through her impulsive behavior and desire to avoid discomfort that make her feel uncomfortable. The ego is revealed in her efforts to make rational decisions and face reality. The superego appears in her moral considerations and sense of responsibility. Alice also faces various conflicts, including internal conflicts related to her identity and external conflicts with the characters in Wonderland. In dealing with conflict, Alice uses five strategies: avoiding, competing, compromising, cooperating, and accommodating, applied depending on the situation. However, collaborating and compromising most often appear during scenes in character development. This study concludes that Alice undergoes a significant psychological transformation and becomes a confident individual capable of making independent decisions. The research is significant as it reveals how literary characters reflect human psychological processes, offering insight into the connection between personality, conflict, and character development in literature.
