THE ANALYSIS OF THE PROTAGONIST'S STRUGGLE FOR LIFE IN THE REVENANT MOVIE

This study analysed The Revenant (2015) movie using a psychological approach. This study aims to describe the type of struggle faced by the protagonist and his motivation in undergoing the struggle of his life. This study uses descriptive qualitative methods, and the data were analysed using a psychological approach and struggle for life theory presented by Braun and Issac (1979). This approach was used to analyse the personality, behaviour, and basic motivation of the protagonist. In collecting data, the researcher uses the library research method. The data was taken from both the movie and the movie script of The Revenant. This was analysed descriptively. Based on the result and discussion, it can be concluded that the protagonist experienced three types of life struggles put forward by Braun and Issac (1979). These three types are a struggle for self, a struggle with others, struggle with the environment. In the struggle with self, Glass faces two major challenges. First, he struggles with strong emotions and outside pressure, which can easily overwhelm him. Second, Glass must physically escape from the native tribe that is chasing him. The struggle that Glass faces with others demonstrates a dual conflict: he must either confront these individuals head-on or take measures to avoid them entirely. The struggle of life with the environment that glass faced was depicted through Hugh's actions as he relies on the environment to stay alive. Also, the researcher discovered that Glass's primary motivation for survival is revenge on Fitzgerald.
