Abstract

This study explored the use of cohesive devices and contextual elements in the animated movie Raya and the Last Dragon, focusing on how discourse is formed through grammatical and lexical cohesion, as well as context of situation and context of culture. This study was analyzed qualitatively using the theory of cohesion (Halliday & Hasan, 1976) and the theory of context (Halliday & Hasan, 1989). These frameworks emphasize the role of cohesion in building textual meaning and the influence of context of situation and culture in shaping language use. Using a descriptive qualitative method and note-taking for data collection, the research identified 416 instances of grammatical cohesion and 78 of lexical cohesion. Among these, personal reference appeared most frequently, showing its role in maintaining clarity and continuity in dialogue. Repetition was the most common lexical device, helping to reinforce key ideas and emotions. The study also examined how situational context, including participants, setting, and communication mode, shaped language use, while cultural context revealed embedded values such as trust, unity, and sacrifice. These were conveyed subtly through character interactions and word choices. Overall, the findings demonstrate how cohesive elements and context work together to create meaning in the movie’s narrative and reflect its cultural identity. This highlights the importance of language in animated movies, not just for storytelling, but for conveying deeper social and cultural messages.
