Abstract

Language is a tool that people used to communicate. language not only functions as a tool for communication that conveys information directly, but it is also greatly influenced by the context in which a conversation takes place, including factors such as location, time, the relationship between the speaker and the listener. Speech acts are one of the study that used by listeners to provide valuable insights into the speaker's intentions and the social context in which the language is used.Illocutionary acts are one of the types of speech acts which are divided into five parts, namely representative, directive, commissive, expressive, and declarative. This study aims to find the types of illocutionary acts contained in a movie by using the theory proposed by Yule (1996) and Halliday (1989) to analyze the meaning of the utterances contained in the movie "The Karate Kid 2010". This study used a qualitative descriptive methodology. Of the five types of illocutionary acts, 50 were found in the film, with directives being the most prominent with 25. Declarative were not found in the data because there were no declarative utterances in the movie “The Karate Kid” 2010.
