Abstract
This study focuses on the animated film Moana 2. It aims to analyze the types of illocutionary acts produced by the main character, Moana, and to investigate how contextual factors influence the meaning of each utterance. The analysis was conducted by applying Searle’s (1979) classification of speech acts, namely assertive, directive, commissive, expressive, and declarative, and was supported by Halliday and Hasan’s (1985) context of situation framework. This study employed a descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected through a documentation technique by watching the film Moana 2, transcribing Moana’s utterances, and selecting utterances relevant to the research objectives. Moana’s utterances served as the primary data of this study. A total of 155 valid utterances were collected and analyzed. Based on the findings, four types of illocutionary acts were identified: assertive, directive, commissive, and expressive, while no declarative acts were found. Assertive acts emerged as the most dominant type with 87 occurrences, indicating Moana’s frequent use of language to convey information, express beliefs, and interpret events. Directive acts occurred 42 times, including both direct and indirect forms. Commissive acts appeared 10 times, reflecting Moana’s commitments to future actions and responsibilities. Expressive acts were found 16 times, revealing her emotional responses throughout the narrative. The absence of declaratives suggested that Moana did not possess the institutional authority required to perform such acts
