Abstract

This study aims to identify the types of Politeness Principle and analysed their functions in the conversation between Joe Rogan and Michael Venom Page on The Powerful JRE Podcast. The research focuses on how politeness principles are realized in a semi-formal podcast setting and how they contribute to maintaining harmonious interaction. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method. The data source is a podcast episode featuring Michael Venom Page on The Powerful JRE Podcast. The data consist of 78 utterances containing politeness principles, collected through documentation by watching the episode and transcribing relevant parts of the conversation. The data were analysed based on Leech’s (1983) Politeness Principle, which includes six maxims: tact, generosity, approbation, modesty, agreement, and sympathy. The analysis was conducted by identifying the types of maxims used and examining their communicative functions within the conversational context. The findings show that all six maxims are employed in the conversation. The Approbation Maxim is the most dominant (43%), followed by Modesty (21%), Agreement (16%), Tact (15%), Sympathy (5%), and Generosity (2%). In terms of function, the politeness principles are mainly used to maintain friendly relations (46.2%), maintain social harmony (34.6%), and ensure the continuity of communication (19.2%). These results indicate that the Politeness Principle plays a significant role in creating cooperative and harmonious interaction in podcast discourse.
