Abstract

This study aims to analyze the syntactical structure of compound sentences found in CoinDesk articles. CoinDesk is an award-winning media outlet covering the cryptocurrency industry. The aims of this study are: (1) to find out the types of compound sentences in CoinDesk articles, and (2) to analyze the constituent structure of compound sentences found in CoinDesk articles. The data of this study consist of compound sentences collected from 38 CoinDesk articles published between May and June 2025. A descriptive qualitative method was employed to achieve the aims of the study. To analyze the types of coordination in compound sentences, this study applied the theory proposed by Quirk (1985). In addition, the constituent structure of each compound sentence was analyzed using constituent structure analysis using tree diagrams based on the theory proposed by Kroeger (2005). The findings reveal that there are 48 data of compound sentences identified in the selected CoinDesk articles. These compound sentences are classified into two types of coordination, namely syndetic coordination and asyndetic coordination. Syndetic coordination is the most frequently occurring type, with a total of 41 data identified. Asyndetic coordination appears less frequently, with 7 data found. Furthermore, the syntactical analysis indicates that compound sentences in CoinDesk articles are composed of independent clauses with varied sentence patterns and phrase structures, reflecting syntactic flexibility while maintaining grammatical coherence in journalistic writing.
