Abstract
This research explored the use of illocutionary acts in the Asian Glow podcast episode entitled “WE’RE GOING ON A ROADTRIP (Enhypen comeback, BTS, & KPOP idols with no aura)”. The study aimed to categorize the types of illocutionary acts and explain how the context of situation modified the illocutionary acts that appeared in “Asian Glow” podcast video. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, with data collected through note-taking technique. To answer the first problem, this study applied theory proposed by Searle (1979) to categorize the types of illocutionary acts, and the second problem by applying theory from Halliday and Hasan (1989) to explain how the context of situation influenced the illocutionary acts in the podcast. The finding presentation method used a table to show the occurrence of types of illocutionary acts found in the episode. From the analysis, 109 utterances were identified and grouped into four categories; assertive, directive, commissive, and expressive. The most frequent were assertive and expressive illocutionary acts, each appearing 30 times (28%), which Clarence and Alcheska used to state opinions and convey emotions during their exchanges. Directive illocutionary acts were found 29 times (26%), typically as straightforward commands, while commissive illocutionary acts were the least common, with 20 instances (18%). No declarative illocutionary acts were observed. To deepen the analysis, Halliday and Hasan’s framework was applied, focusing on field (the activity taking place), tenor (the participants and their relationship), and mode (the channel of communication). These contextual elements revealed how the situation influenced the hosts’ speech. For instance, assertive often emerged when Clarence and Alcheska voiced opinions, whereas expressive highlighted emotional or personal reactions.
