Abstract

This research analyzes the illocutionary acts found in Candace Owens’ podcast entitled Becoming Brigitte: The Epilogue. The data in this study was analyzed using qualitative descriptive methods. The findings on the type of sentence explanation data were analyzed using Searle’s theory (1969), and the findings on the function of sentence explanation data were analyzed using Leech’s theory (1983). Both theories are supported by Halliday and Hasan’s (1985) theory of context of situation. The results of this study show that there are 261 data of illocutionary acts. The results show that the assertive part is the most dominant data used by Candace Owens in her podcast, containing 191 data. In terms of function, the most dominant result was found in competitive with 123 data. The dominance of assertive speech acts and competitive functions indicates that this podcast focuses on delivering claims, opinions, and investigative narratives that are argumentative in nature. Through the combination of the two, the podcaster directs the listeners’ thoughts to follow the line of reasoning and believe the narrative that is being constructed. Further research on illocutionary acts using different theories and methods is needed. It is hoped that this research can contribute to the field of education and serve as a reference for further research.
