Abstract

This study aims to analyze the functions of subordinate clauses in complex sentences and to examine their constituent structures as found in selected articles of Vogue Online Magazine. The data were taken from three lifestyle-related articles published on February 5 and 6, 2025. A descriptive qualitative method was applied to analyze the data. The functions of subordinate clauses were identified using Aarts’ (2001) theory, while the constituent structures were analyzed through tree diagrams based on Brown and Miller’s (1991) framework. In addition, Quirk et al. (1985) was used as a supporting theory to classify sentence types. The findings reveal that a total of 41 complex sentences containing subordinate clauses were identified. Only three of the four subordinate clause functions proposed by Aarts (2001) were found in the data. Subordinate clauses functioning as adjuncts were the most dominant, occurring 21 times or 51%, followed by subordinate clauses functioning as complements within phrases with 14 occurrences or 34%. Subordinate clauses functioning as direct objects were the least frequent, appearing 6 times or 15%. The analysis also shows that subordinate clauses commonly occur in medial and final positions within sentences, reflecting stylistic characteristics of fashion journalism. This study highlights how complex sentence structures contribute to the expressive and descriptive writing style of Vogue Online Magazine.
